South of Broadway

Theatre Company

About us

South of Broadway Theatre Company's (SOBTC) vision is to be South Carolina's first Broadway-quality, fully-professional LORT* theatre company. It will create a regionally, nationally and internationally visible cultural force which will attract and retain intellectual capital, and significantly impact economic development in the Low Country.

The spectrum of benefit to the community will encompass educational benefits: Equity Membership Candidacy program (not elsewhere available in the state), internships for South Carolina students alongside nationally and internationally prominent names in the arts, local outreach programs including specifically designed programs for at-risk and under-served groups, and expectations to build alliances with theatre departments in colleges and universities state-wide.

As we move into 2012, SOBTC offers a full season of adult and youth theatre, at their facility in the trendy Park Circle area of North Charleston.  We will also be producing three concert performances at the North Charleston Performing Arts Center:  “Boeing Presents South of Broadway Theatre Company.”  Check our schedule for all performance details and dates.

In addition, we have offer a summer artistic residency in NYC, a full spectrum of classes, workshops, outreach programs, a Play Festival and a playwriting workshop.

Summer in the City, (heading into its eighth year) is a highly successful artistic residency in New York City where participants reside at the famous Juilliard School Residence Hall. Individual courses of intensive study are designed for each participant, as well as a variety of group workshops, classes and masterclasses with well known artists and academicians. Every year South of Broadway Theatre Company awards from $10,000 to $15,000 in scholarships to Summer in the City participants.

The ShowBiz School: "Professional instruction for all ages" was established in 2005 and provides a variety of acting classes and voice lessons with qualified instructors.  The ShowBiz School also offers four fully staged workshop productions for youth ages 9-18.

The Greater Park Circle Play Fest:   Three weekends in September features new full length plays and evenings featuring a variety of shorter works.

Second Sundays at Seven: Second Sundays at Seven is designed for professional and amateur writers. We encourage collaboration, constructive feedback and fostering an open and friendly atmosphere to show off new works, experimental and challenging plays, scenes, poems, and live performance pieces. We encourage all levels of actors to join our team as performers. Our audience is made up of other supportive writers, actors, literature lovers and theatre patrons.  Our goal is to have works from this series move on to our Play Festival.

- Action workshops for the at-risk and under served using the theatre model
- Enhancing literacy through the theatre models
- Mentoring educators on literacy standards
- Educators workshops to implement theatre model into literacy curriculum
- Playwright workshops used as a tool for social integration for at-risk youth

*There are approximately 75 theatres across the country belonging to the "League Of Resident Theaters". None exists in South Carolina. A theatre of this designation is eligible to receive an award during the annual Broadway "Tony Awards" and to partner with national, and internationally renowned theatres and Broadway Production Houses.
