
Playwright, actor, director and performance poet Matt Hampton has lived in Charleston for five years since being stationed here with the U.S. Air Force. An alumnus of the University of Missouri – Columbia, he has studied new play development intimately with David Crespy, Syl Jones, Tony Kushner and many others. A prolific playwright, Matt has penned more than forty scripts and seven one man shows. His works have been performed at Monday Night Blues, The Loose Change Players and numerous other venues. His play, Burning the Saint, was only the third full length play by an undergraduate to be performed on the University Main Stage. As an actor and director he has worked on over fifty productions with numerous groups in Missouri and South Carolina. Matt has worked as a teacher for the Mizzou New Play Series, numerous non-profit organizations and is an artist-in-residence for 2008-2009 with the Yo Art! Project in the Charleston Public Schools as well as the Department of Recreation.
As a poet, Matt Hampton has been a founding member of The Outlaw Poets in Missouri and Charleston as well as a House Poet for the Poetry Show of Charleston and multiple time feature poet for Monday Night Blues. In 2008 he travelled with the “Charleston Five,” including the Poet Laureate of South Carolina, to present a panel discussion on Writing in a Warrior Culture at the Split This Rock Poetry Festival in Washington D.C.
His latest projects include creating a fully functional workshop for new play development in the Charleston area.
