South of Broadway Launches:
The Magical Theatre Academy

As we roll into 2024, our Twentieth Year Anniversary year of producing theatre and entertainment in North Charleston, South of Broadway Theatre Company (SOBTC) continues its long-held commitment to educational programming for youth with its “Magical Theatre Academy”.

With this program, Artistic Director, Mary Gould, has created a program building on SOBTC’s long-time tag-line: “There’s Magic in the Wings”. The tag-line was originally inspired by Stanislavski’s writings acknowledging ‘Mystical Moments’ in theatre that transcended the ordinary and bordered on the magical/mystical. These moments could be elusive and difficult to define, but they were seen as the essence of the magical and spiritual aspects of theatre. That magical spark is the result of discipline, inspiration and passion.

This magical, Immersive theatre training experience begins with “G.I.F.T – Goal Image Focusing Techniques” and other mindfulness practices will follow to encourage and inspire participants to reach for their personal best. This is the program for youth interested in delving deeper into the world of theatre, and who are passionate about theatre and want to put in the time and effort required to excel.

The core program will offer scene study, monologue/character development, singing, and introduce creative writing exercises to encourage storytelling and scriptwriting. Students will also be featured in open to the public showcases which will demonstrate increased skill levels. A variety of other classes and workshops are in the planning stages and will be offered as time allows. The program will begin on January 16 and will meet twice a week until the first week of April.  More details will follow and a complete schedule will be available at the auditions.

Auditions for the new program are on January 8th and 10th:  5-7PM. Auditioners will be asked to do a ‘cold reading’ (scripts provided on site), sing a verse of Happy Birthday, and write a short paragraph about their passion for theatre. Auditions will be in the order of on-site sign in.

Auditions are at:  3346 Rivers Avenue, 1A, North Charleston. Our facility is in the Reynolds Station Office Park between Cosgrove and Reynolds Avenues. We are the end unit. For more information auditioners may email:, or call: Mary Gould at 843 814-4451.

This program is funded in part by The South Carolina Arts Commission.
